Terms

These are the terms of service for Cresset. They're written to be read; if anything here is confusing, email support@cresset.app and we'll explain.

Accepting these terms

By creating an account on Cresset, or by continuing to use the site after we update these terms, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Cresset.

Who can use Cresset

You must be at least 18 years old to use Cresset. You confirm you're 18 or older when you create an account. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 18, we'll close it.

One account per person. You're responsible for what happens under your account; keep your passkeys safe. If you think your account has been used by someone else, email support@cresset.app.

Site rules

These apply across the whole site. Communities can add their own rules on top.

  1. No illegal content. No CSAM, no credible threats of violence, no content that violates US law. We report what the law requires us to report.
  2. No harassment. No targeted abuse, stalking, or pile-ons. Argue ideas, not identities.
  3. No hate speech. No content that dehumanizes people based on who they are — race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and so on.
  4. No doxing. Don't post private information — home addresses, phone numbers, private emails, employer details — about anyone, yourself included.
  5. No spam or vote manipulation. Don't post the same thing repeatedly, don't run vote rings, don't brigade. Genuine bot accounts are welcome with the bot flag set; bots that mimic humans aren't.
  6. No impersonation. Don't pose as another user, a public figure, or a Cresset employee.
  7. NSFW content is allowed where flagged. If a post is sexual, graphic, or otherwise not for everyone, flag it NSFW. Posting NSFW without a flag is a violation. Some communities ban it outright; check their rules.
  8. Don't break the site. No exploiting bugs, scraping in ways that impose meaningful load, or attempting to access data you're not authorized to see.

Your content

You keep ownership of what you post. By posting, you grant Cresset a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, display, distribute, and back up that content for the purpose of operating the site. That license ends when the content is deleted from the site, except that we may retain backups and audit logs for a reasonable period.

When you delete your account, your posts and comments are reattributed to [deleted] so threads don't fall apart, unless you also choose to remove them at the same time. See the privacy policy for the exact mechanics.

Trust tiers and rate limits

To slow down spam and abuse, we group accounts into four trust tiers — new, regular, established, and trusted — based on age and activity, and apply two profiles of rate limits (probationary for new accounts, standard for everyone else). The current numbers and the promotion thresholds live at How does this all work? and may change as we tune for abuse.

Moderation

Communities have moderators who enforce site rules and any local rules within their community. Site admins handle global issues. Mods can remove posts and comments, soft-hide posts (lower their ranking), and ban users from a community. Admins can ban users from the whole site.

A removal is a strike against your account. Three active strikes resets your trust tier; a permanent ban resets it as well. If you think a moderator decision was wrong, reply to the notification email or write to support@cresset.app.

Termination

You can delete your account at any time from settings. We can suspend or terminate accounts for breaking these rules; we'll usually warn first, unless the violation is severe enough that a warning isn't appropriate.

Email hashes after deletion

When you delete your account, we keep a SHA-256 hash of your normalized email so we can recognize the same person attempting to re-register after a permanent ban. We don't keep the email itself.

No warranty

Cresset is provided as-is. We do our best to keep the site up, the data safe, and the moderation fair, but we can't promise the site will be available, error-free, or that anyone else's posts are accurate. To the extent the law allows, Cresset and its operators aren't liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the site.

Governing law

Cresset is operated by 707 Labs LLC, a Minnesota LLC (707labs.net). These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Minnesota and applicable U.S. federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from these terms or your use of Cresset will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Minnesota.

Changes to these terms

We'll update this page when the terms change and update the "last updated" date at the bottom. If a change is material, we'll also announce it on the site. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms.
